The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan announced that the corporations Électricité de France (EDF), Nebras Power and Sojitz have won the tender for the construction of a gas turbine power plant in the Syrdarya region.

According to Power-eng.com the French energy company EDF, Qatar's Nebras and Japan's Sojitz have signed a 25-year contract with the National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan JSC for the purchase of electricity, financing and construction of a new power station. A combined gas turbine power plant with a capacity of 1200-1600 MW will be twice as efficient as compared to power plants of the old generation. It will save on natural gas consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

The construction of a thermal power station in Syrdarya is part of the country's overall strategy to modernize outdated energy infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions from gas consumption in Uzbekistan.

According to Reuters, the company will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, commissioning and operation of the 1,560 megawatt power plant for 25 years. The Government of Uzbekistan has allocated 150 hectares of land for the station in the Angora district of Surkhandarya region. The station is expected to be operational by the end of 2024.
