The construction of a wind power plant has been launched in the Biruniy district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the press service of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan reports.

The construction will be carried out jointly with the Saudi company ACWA Power, which won an international tender with the participation of two dozen applicants. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new energy facility was attended by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who arrived in Karakalpakstan on a working visit the day before.

The only power plant in the region, the Takhiatash thermal power plant was built more than half a century ago and currently could no longer satisfy the growing energy demands of the republic. Therefore, its modernization was carried out, additional capacities of 560 megawatts were introduced.

The new wind farm with a capacity of 360 million kilowatt-hours per year will be able to provide electricity to 110 thousand households and will save more than 100 million cubic meters of gas per year.

As part of the power plant construction project, 25 wind turbines will be installed and a 20-kilometer 220 kV power transmission line will be laid. The construction work will create thousands of jobs, and after the commissioning of the facility, more than a hundred qualified engineers and electricians will be provided with work.
