An industrial-scale solar photoelectric power plant with a capacity of 100 MW has been launched in the Samarkand region of Uzbekistan.

The PPP, built in the Nurabad district of the Samarkand region, began to supply electricity to the only power system in Uzbekistan. It is capable of generating 260 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and providing electricity to more than 80 thousand homes.

"Commissioning of the plant will save 78 million cubic meters of natural gas per year and prevent the release of 100 thousand tons of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. With such an amount of saved gas, it is possible to provide all existing households of the country with natural gas within 10 days," the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

400 workers were employed in the construction, after commissioning, 25 new jobs were created at the station. The project was implemented through direct investments by the French company Total Eren, for $ 100 million. This plant is the second largest solar photoelectric plant in the history of Uzbekistan for generating electricity from renewable energy sources. The first similar solar photoelectric plant was launched in August 2021 in the Karmaninsky district of Navoi region. By the end of 2023, the Emirati company Masdar will launch the second largest solar photoelectric plant in the region with a capacity of 220 MW in the Kattakurgan district of the Samarkand region.
