The ceremony of start of construction of the Yavan hydropower plant on the Zarafshan river was held during visit of the President of Tajikistan to Uzbekistan. This was reported by the press service of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Emomali Rahmon, by pressing a symbolic button, started the construction. This is the first major project of bilateral energy cooperation. A modern plant with a capacity of 140 megawatts will play an important role in ensuring energy security, sustainability of the water and agricultural sectors of countries.

Engineering works will be carried out entirely on the basis of modern standards with the involvement of leading global companies. Leading international institutions, including the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, have shown interest in participating in the financing of the project.

The project will strengthen the scientific and production potential of the industry, provide thousands and thousands of households and new enterprises with "green" energy.

Earlier it was reported that the construction of hydroelectric power plants is planned to be carried out in stages: first, the construction of the Yavan HPP with an estimated cost of $ 282 million, with a capacity of 140 MW and the generation of 700-800 million kWh of electricity.

At the next stage, the parties will consider the possibility of constructing a hydroelectric power station on the Fandarya River with an estimated cost of $ 270 million, a capacity of 135 MW and a generation of 500-600 million kWh of electricity. The project will be financed from borrowed and grant funds of international financial organizations, as well as by the parties' own funds invested in the authorized fund of the jointly created enterprise. The constructed hydroelectric power plants will generate up to 1400 million kWh of environmentally friendly electricity exclusively for the needs of Uzbekistan.
