The train, which will travel approximately 5,500 km, has the distinction of being the longest-consisting of the most containers - at one time and the first export train to the farthest distance from Turkey.
Arkas Logistics CEO Onur Göçmez said, “We have been giving importance to the railway for many years and we continue to invest to it. Due to spread of COVID – 19, the railway delivery became very important. On the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) line, the load we have already carried from Turkey to the Commonwealth of Independent States has passed 65 thousand tons. We aim to increase the weekly rail departures to two times a week. We are currently planning to build two terminals in Mersin-Yenice and Izmit-Karatepe. Our fleet has more than 700 wagons. We are the company that started scheduled railway trips by loading the first train from Turkey on BTK railway line”.
In the international trade, the role of railway increased its importance. The reason is that, the train deliveries are contactless by the people which eliminates the danger of spreading COVID – 19. At this point, the railway has special place in coming out of the crisis. The railways provide stable trade during COVID – 19 pandemic. The advantage in railway transportation is that, it needs only two people in a train to deliver cargo to the required destination.
Recall that, on April 18, 2020 the 940 – meter export train with the cargo on 82 containers set off from Turkey’s Kars province. The train headed towards to Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
