It was decided to rename Astana in honor of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Wednesday, March 20.
The relevant amendments were adopted in the Constitution of Kazakhstan in the second final reading.
Deputies of the lower and upper houses of Parliament considered amendments to the Constitution regarding renaming Astana in honor of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Speaker of the Majilis Nurlan Nigmatulin spoke at the joint session of the chambers. He said: "In accordance with the Constitution, the government made a proposal to the President of Kazakhstan to hold a Republican referendum to amend the Constitution to change the name of Astana. The President decided to send the proposal to the Parliament without submitting it to a referendum. The constitutional Council presented a positive opinion on this issue,"
It is noted that all the present deputies - 43 from the Senate and 102 from the Parliament-voted for renaming Astana to Nursultan.
It should be recalled that on March 19, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his resignation. He noted that he will continue to serve the people of the Republic "as a person who loves his country".
The new President of Kazakhstan was Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev. The handover ceremony took place on March 20.
