The President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, arrived on the first working visit to the Holy City of Turkestan. During the visit, it is planned to get acquainted with the construction of the regional center, to visit a number of industrial and social facilities, as well as to meet with representatives of the public of the region.

During his trip, Tokaev got acquainted with the archaeological and architectural monuments of the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve "Azret-Sultan", and also examined the Khoja Ahmed Yassavi mausoleum. At the same time, he heard reports on the progress of restoration work on cultural sites and on the landscaping of the museum-reserve.

In addition, the president was informed about the construction of administrative buildings of the regional akimat, offices, departments, as well as the Congress Hall, Media Center, “Uly Dala Eli” (The Great Steppe Country) Center, Schoolchildren’s Palace, Tourism College, Astana Square, Music Fountain, Public Service Center and other social and cultural facilities.

Turkestan became a city of regional significance on June 19, 2018, becoming the center of the Turkestan region, which was previously called South Kazakhstan. The former center of the South Kazakhstan region - the city of Shymkent - received the status of a city of republican significance, and became the third metropolis of Kazakhstan after Astana and Almaty.
