Kazpravda.kz reported that Magzum Mirzagaliev, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan spoke about the progress of modernization and expansion of infrastructure for irrigation of land in Kazakhstan during the Government meeting.

"In 2020-2021, 6,785 kilometers of canals, 4 reservoirs, 4 waterworks, 239 vertical drainage wells and about 23,000 other water facilities will be reconstructed in Kazakhstan," Mirzagaliyev said. In addition, 88 thousand jobs will be created, including 11 thousand for the period of construction and repair work and 77 thousand permanent jobs after the completion according to minister.
“The volume of gross agricultural output from these lands will amount to 165 billion tenge per year and will have a multiplier effect in the areas of trade, product processing, livestock,” the minister continued. As he noted, it is necessary to create additional sources of irrigation by constructing new reservoirs. "By 2030, 28 reservoirs are planned to be built in Akmola, Aktobe, Karaganda and Zhambyl regions. They will enable the accumulation of 3.8 cubic meters of water. At the same time, 12 reservoirs are planned to be used not only for irrigation, but also to prevent flood threats from 70 settlements, " Mirzagaliyev said. The Minister also recalled that the Head of State assigned him to increase the area of irrigated lands to 3 million hectares. The construction of reservoirs will involve a creation of 29 thousand job places in the rural sector, " he noted.
