On January 21-27, a regular meeting of the delegations of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan was held in Dushanbe to coordinate organizational and legal issues on the demarcation of the Uzbek-Tajik state border.

"During the negotiations, drafts of relevant regulatory and technical documents were prepared, on the basis of which the parties will begin the negotiation process to determine the state border line on the ground for demarcation work," the press service of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

Before there were various disagreements between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, including the demarcation of the state border. However, after Shavkat Mirziyoyev came to power, to “reset” relations with his neighbors in the region, in particular, with Tajikistan became one of the top priorities in the foreign policy.

The parties resumed the dialogue on border and water and energy issues, opened flights between the capitals, abolished the visa regime.

In March last year, the two heads of state reached an agreement that by the end of 2019 they would complete work on demining sections of the joint border. The agreement between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on certain sections of the Tajik-Uzbek state border was signed during the state visit of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Dushanbe on March 9-10, 2018.

According to the State Committee on Land Management and Geodesy of Tajikistan, the length of the Tajik-Uzbek border is 1,332 km. Of the total length , the river border is 105 kilometers, land  is 1227 km.
