In recent years, Central Asian countries have shown interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UCAVs) to strengthen their armies.

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are among these countries. It is observed that a significant number of these countries are increasingly turning to Turkey for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles. Exports of UAVs and UCAVs by Turkish companies have been increasing in recent years. 

Uzbekistan

On November 16, the Tashkent-based news website “Podrobno” reported that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited a military unit in Surkhanderya Province in southern Uzbekistan, bordering Afghanistan, where he was shown Turkish drones, BBC Monitoring Service reported.

The drones are allegedly used to monitor the border with Afghanistan. According to the report, military officials told Mirziyoyev about efforts to improve the capacity of the Uzbek army, and in this context they spoke of their interest in modern weapons systems and drones.

"The president also spoke about the importance of unmanned aerial vehicles and discussed with experts the issues of their production," the report said.

Mirziyoyev also watched a flight demonstration of Bayraktar TB2 during the visit, according to "Podrobno". Bayraktar TB2 is a model of unmanned aerial vehicle produced by "Baykar" company. In January 2022, the State Committee for Defense Industry of Uzbekistan announced the start of production of UAVs called Shahin. The Committee stated that these UAVs are locally produced.

Kazakhstan

According to the BBC Monitoring Service, Kazakhstan's state news agency Kazakinform, based in Astana, reported on November 28 that the Kazakh Defense Ministry said it had included drones in its inventory.

The report said that when asked about the number of drones, the answer was "enough." In December, Kazakhstan's Defense Minister Ruslan Zhaksylykov said Kazakhstan will jointly produce drones with South Korea.

In May 2022, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported that Anka UAVs would be co-produced in Kazakhstan under a new memorandum of cooperation signed by TUSAŞ (Turkish Aviation and Space Industry) with Kazakhstan Engineering.

At the same time, Kazakh officials made a similar announcement. In November 2023, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Defense announced that it was looking for a local company to produce Turkish drones in the country.

The ministry made the following statement In Kazakh press: "The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan is cooperating with the Ministry of Industry and Construction on the selection of local companies for the production of UAVs."

According to reports, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Defense has also stated that it plans to transfer Turkish drone technology to Kazakhstan as a part of an agreement with Turkey.

On December 25, 2023, Anadolu Agency reported that the Kazakh Defense Ministry published the shots of Kazakh soldiers testing the ANKA-S drone produced by TUSAŞ.

According to Shokan Musabekov, head of the UAV Combat Application Center, if the military tests are successfully completed, the ANKA-S will enter service with Kazakhstan's Air Defense Forces.

 

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan has long been trying to improve security in the south in Batken city. This is a decentralized and unstable region bordering Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

In the past, the region has been the scene of armed insurgencies by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which is listed as a "terrorist organization" by several countries.

After Kyrgyzstan's independence in 1991, border disputes led to clashes between Kyrgyz, Uzbek and Tajik border guards. In 2021, Kyrgyzstan acquired the Bayraktar TB2 UAV to reinforce its border troops.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Sadyr Zhaparov inaugurated the base for the TB2 UAVs of the Border Guard Service of the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security.

As Anadolu Agency reported, Kyrgyzstan purchased TUSAŞ's Aksungur and Baykar Akıncı drones from Turkey in October 2023. President Zhaparov, accompanied by Kamchybek Tashiev, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security, toured the base where the Aksungur and Akıncı were deployed.

The agency reported that a day later, a military exercise was held in which Bayraktar TB2, Akıncı and Aksungur drones took part and was observed by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov and Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar.

Turkmenistan

In Turkmenistan, the Bayraktar TB2 was among the weapons on the balance sheet of the Turkmenistan Armed Forces that were presented at a military parade organized to mark the 30th anniversary of independence in 2021.

Finally, in September 2023, according to news reports, the Bayraktar TB2 also participated in a military ceremony to mark the 32nd anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence.
